Ideas to improve our community

I asked the community for simple ideas that will make a big difference to our community. You can view the ideas below and update on where the ideas are at (You can also view the latest video on this topic below)

The two ideas that we have progressed are:

1. Device to keep bin lids shut to reduce litter.

2. Install bench seating on the footpath at ideal locations on the main road between the fire station and Dodges Ferry shops.

Summary of the small ideas that could have a big impact

Area Idea Progress
LGA Device to keep bin lids shut to reduce litter Residents asked to participate in trial. Once trial is finished and if successful then roll out campaign to allow all residents to purchase one at a discount.
Sorell Install a public water foundation in Sorell
Dodges Ferry Install bench seating on the footpath at ideal locations between the fire station and shops also consider at the end 7th avenue Spoke with Council and they are interested to hear what  the community thinks.
LGA Establish a significant tree register
LGA Second hand/antiques, art & craft trail/directory
LGA Plant more trees
LGA Plantings on roundabouts and beautification
LGA sculpture trail

All ideas provided by a video and posts on facebook (May 2025)

MUNICIPALITY WIDE
- More bins in general
- Plant more trees
- see more regular roadside cleanups
- Closer tip/waste transfer station
- Not spraying all the nature strips in the residential areas. It causes erosion in some places where the vegetation (grass) dies, looks awful, and the poison aspect is disturbing
- Council stop having negative impacts on the remaining native bushland and steams in the area to preserve the local fauna and flora (orchiids in particular) - the recent platypus death a case in point. Even the recent drain works near BWS may have a negative impact to the watercourse down-stream in the bush reserve across the road (perhaps that risk has been mitigated). There should be more consultation with the community before things like that are done.
- To establish a significant tree register across the municipality and within that register significant vegetation systems. This might give both plants and local wildlife 1/2 a fighting chance of coexisting with increasing urbanisation across the southern beaches.
- "Secondhand/antiques, art & craft trail" because it seems to be a strength. Other towns could be included too.
- Graffiti eradication
- Plantings on round abouts and beautification
- Anti Isolation events that encourage gatherings at community centres that are free during winter.
- Council to offer soft plastic recycling
- The Park Beach bus shelter would have one of the best views in Tasmania, imagine how good it could look?? ( we held a community workshop to paint the one opposite the shop and at Park Beach) it’s looking very tired! I am not a painter!! ) some more art around the place would be great
DUNALLEY
- A footpath along the Arthur Highway in Dunalley
- Find a clever solution for an attachment to bins so that when they get blown over in the wind the rubbish doesn’t fly everywhere. We walk Carlton river road most weekends now and pick up over 3-4 bags of rubbish every weekend.
FORECTT
- A walking track along Quarry Rd. There are so many school children, teenagers and adults walking to the bus stop along there! Would make it so much safer and accessible.
- A mountain bike park (MTB) in forcet or any government owned mountain area. Similar to the Meehan Range MTB park. It's an awesome family activity. All the MTB parks in Tassie have been a huge success for the communities.
CARLTON
- The crossing from Carlton Beach road across to third/first Avenue is where many children cross as these back roads are a safe, direct way to school. The traffic island in this spot is very narrow and can hardly fit a bike, however children stop here, not realising they are still over hanging the road with their bikes, especially if they are travelling in a group. Cars are often stopping (unexpectedly) to let the children across this part of the road safely.
- Maybe improvements to the path along Carlton River Road so cyclists chose to use it rather than the road. I'm not sure if it's a bit unsafe and that's why folks use the road instead.
- A bike path/footpath around the Dodges/Carlton loop.
- Footpath along Carlton beach Rd between Moomere and ulvergene.Complete the loop.
- A toilet at snakes hollow park and a bbq?
SORELL & MIDWAY POINT
- The bus stops at Sorell Park and Ride are quite inadequate. They only offer shelter for 1-2 individuals and seats are exposed to the elements like wind and rain. Those waiting for the bus deserve better protection from the elements.
- Public water fountains installed in Sorell
- a bike track from Carlton to sorell. It's impossible to ride to sorell on the highway. Way too busy and dangerous, with traffic.
- More buses going through Midway Point extending to Penna including the new subdivisions
DODGES FERRY
- Traffic island between the coffee van and fire station
- Upgrade to the boat park so that it’s more accessible for all ages
- Upgrade to parking in Park Beach
- Seats near the footpaths so if anyone has an issue can sit and not fall and also crossing near the school to make it safer for elderly and kids to cross over. Crossing over near the gym or even near the fire station. Or possibly near the entrance to the school where there’s no open drains. And couple of bench seats near path going to the shop. Just nowhere to sit if anyone needs to. Lots of kids and elderly down here now
- An upgrade of the playground at the dodges park would be great, something added for babies/toddler/younger kids (age 0- say 7) to actually play and explore. Most of it is either very basic for them or on the other hand way too big
- More seating. For instance at the end of seventh Avenue
- An asphalt bike pump track near the school 😊 great for beginner to advanced riders 👍 see pic of the one in Kingston. Anyone who has ever been to derby knows how amazing pump tracks are for kids of all ages!!! Even a gravel one would be great if funding doesn't allow for the hard surface. Their was so much excitement when there was talk of one being built at Snake Hollow Park, however the one that was built there is really only appealing to very small children.
- Walking pathways around primrose. I have to walk on the road, with a blind corner and its so beautiful here there should be a coastal track.
- A cycle path on “the loop” - Carlton beach road, Carlton river road, back to Carlyon beach road.
- Some more equipment at the little Carlton Snake Hollow park would probably be appreciated by parents, but some BBQs and a shelter and maybe a toilet would be great for the rest of us too. it's a great park, and in a natural environment. Great for kids to use their imaginations, run, play and explore. I'd love to see some funding allocated to make it family friendly.
- Parking at Park beach needs to be addressed in peak season. It's a bloody nightmare. Parnella road turns into parking on both sides. could making it one way only make flow better? Especially with both cafes busy in peak season. Will only be a matter of time before someone is hurt.
- How about continuing the footpaths along Carlton Beach Rd from East Street. Parts of it are totally unsafe for walking dogs or parents pushing strollers, even runners need to resort to running on the road?
- I believe that the parking and footpath area close to the butcher and bakery at Dodges Ferry poses a risk for accidents. Although I understand that the parking may be on private property, the traffic flow could be enhanced to prevent cars from reversing into the pedestrian walkway.
-
A school crossing to make it safer for kids to walk and ride to school.
- A sealed footpath from the shop right along to the school, new pool, Healthy Horizons and Skate Park area.
- A crossing guard for the school children at the multi Junction to jetty rd area maybe
- Continued upgrades to Carlton beach road especially the area near Arnott street - especially as there is a run club each Sunday from park cafe along Carlton beach road towards the river. It is really really unsafe.
- Showers at Blue lagoon car park, Park beach and Carlton beach for swimmers to rinse off.

LEWISHAM
- I would like to see the walking trail improved along Lewisham foreshore from the boat ramp to the Lewis Court end.😊
PENNA
-  more street lights installed down Penna road? It is very dark of a night time and I believe more street lights would be beneficial.
