Box Thorn Free Midway

November 2025

After planting 150 natives, we are back removing more boxthorn and ensuring the natives plants thrive. It's incredible to see the progress we have made.

August 2025

After many months clearing boxthorn we have planted 150 shrubs, grasses and ground covers!

June 2025

The Sorell Fire Brigade and Midway Point-Sorell Fire Brigade burnt our cutdown Boxthorn to clear the area ready for planting!

May 2025

With much of the weed now cleared, we’re excited to begin planting native species to help revegetate the foreshore. Our first community planting day is scheduled for mid June, with regular working bees continuing every month. In  early June, the Midway Point and Sorell Fire Brigades will generously carry out a planned burn to remove the rest.

April 2025

After a few months of working bees to remove the boxthorn, we burnt the cutdown weed to create biochar. This will clear the land ready for planting natives in late May. Biochar is a solid, carbon-rich material produced when organic matter (e.g. plants) is heated to very high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment. It can be used to enhance the quality of soils and increase water retention. We borrowed a Biochar kiln from Landcare (Thank you Bill) and created about 340L. You can watch the video of the process HERE and see a picture of the kiln in action below. You can read more about Biochar HERE.

Nov 2025

I and the Sorell and Surrounds Landcare group have partnered to launch an initiative to remove the terribly invasive weed, Boxthorn. Boxthorn is easily recognisable with its very large thorns and red berries. After removal of the boxthorn we will plant native species which will form habitat for local wildlife and increase biodiversity.

Here is a group of us at our first working bee!
