Update on the causeway upgrade project (Nov 2025)

A few people have asked me about the Causeway upgrade. Here’s a quick update from a conversation with State Growth. For an official response, get in touch with them directly.
The project is currently awaiting environmental approvals from both the state and federal governments. Additional information has been requested by the federal government, so the team is working through that now. A full public update is expected in the first half of 2026.
There’s no confirmed start date for the causeway construction yet, so it’s likely quite a while away. However, the section between the airport and just before Midway Point side of the causeway is further along in design and could start first half of next year (pending approvals).
In terms of design:
-The airport side of the Causeway is well advanced, and modelling shows the existing pipes will continue to provide adequate environmental water flow (a concern raised by a resident).
-The Sorell side is still in early design. All options, including a bridge option (rather than an extended culvert) is being explored including opportunities to improve water flow into Orielton Lagoon.
-Designers are continuing to assess several options.
