Infrastructure to keep up with population growth

Current situation

  • Sorell and Midway Point are among the fastest growing areas in Tasmania.
  • Recent decisions by the Tasmanian Government to expand urban growth boundaries mean that hundreds of additional dwellings could be built on top of already approved subdivisions over the coming years.
  • This growth brings opportunity, but it also places increasing pressure on local infrastructure and services.

The issue

  • As the population increases, essential infrastructure must keep pace to ensure our community remains liveable and connected.
  • Facilities such as public pools, parks and playgrounds, public toilets, GP clinics, commercial spaces and safe, well maintained roads are all critical to supporting growing families, older residents and local businesses.
  • Without timely investment, residents face overcrowded facilities, longer travel times to access services, and declining quality of life.

My plan

  • I will advocate strongly to state and federal governments for targeted infrastructure funding that keeps pace with population growth and reflects clearly identified community needs.
  • I will also advocate for cash windfalls received by Council from subdivision developments to be reinvested directly into infrastructure upgrades within the immediate local community, rather than being absorbed into the general Council budget.

The benefits

  • Local infrastructure grows alongside population growth, reducing pressure on existing facilities and services.
  • Residents benefit from improved access to recreation, health care and community spaces close to home.
  • Council funds are used more transparently, building trust that development contributions are improving local areas.
  • Communities remain attractive, healthy and liveable places for current and future residents.
