Current situation
- Access to affordable fitness options is limited in the Sorell Municipality.
- Gyms can feel intimidating and may lack the fun and social atmosphere that some people need to stay active.
- The Municipality has a number of outdoor sports facilities (football ovals, skate parks, Pembroke park) but lacks opportunities for non-team low-impact exercises and wellbeing activities.
- Outdoor green space such as parks and playground areas are underused for health and wellbeing activities.
The issue
- There is a lack of free health and wellbeing activities, which means residents are missing opportunities for social connection and preventative health outcomes.
- Residents report that cost is a barrier to regular physical activity, particularly for older people, people with disability, and those on low incomes.
- Council has an opportunity to better utilise public spaces to support community connectivity and wellbeing.
My plan
- Introduce free fitness sessions in local parks, with the option to move to a nearby indoor venue or hall in poor weather, starting in Sorell, Midway Point, and Dodges Ferry.
- Run the program on a 12 month trial, then review participation and feedback and consider expanding the program to other areas if successful.
- Council will pay for sessions to be delivered by a qualified fitness instructor and include yoga, aerobics, balance work, bodyweight exercises, circuits, core strengthening, and walking, with activities adapted to individual needs.
Benefits of this policy
- Improves physical and mental health outcomes across the community.
- Reduces cost barriers and increases participation in health and wellbeing activities.
- Strengthens social connection and reduces isolation.
- Encourages active use of parks and public spaces.
- Supports preventative health, potentially reducing long term health costs.
