Current situation
- While parts of Lewisham have footpaths, there is no continuous walking loop connecting key roads through the township.
- Lewisham Scenic Drive, Old Forcett Road and Quarry Road form a natural loop, but sections, particularly along Lewisham Scenic Drive, lack safe pedestrian infrastructure.
- Many residents currently walk on the road shoulder or very close to moving traffic.
The issue
- Walking along Lewisham Scenic Drive can be unsafe due to narrow road shoulders, higher traffic volumes and vehicles travelling at speed.
- Families, older residents, children and people with mobility aids are discouraged from walking because they do not feel safe.
- The lack of connected footpaths limits opportunities for healthy recreation and reduces walkability within the community.
My plan
- Develop a continuous loop walking path linking Lewisham Scenic Drive, Old Forcett Road and Quarry Road. This can be completed in staged over a number of financial years.
- Prioritise construction of the section along Lewisham Scenic Drive, where pedestrian safety concerns are greatest.
- Design the pathway to be accessible for people of all ages and abilities, including parents with prams, wheelchair users and older residents.
- Seek funding through Council's capital works program and advocate for State and Federal infrastructure grants to help deliver the project.
- Engage with residents during the design process to ensure the path meets local needs while protecting the natural character of Lewisham.
