Advocate for improved public transport services for Midway Point, Sorell and Southern Beaches

Current situation

  • The last bus service from Hobart to Midway Point, Sorell and Dodges Ferry on both weekdays and weekends departs at 6.30pm.
  • Many commuter services are routed through Rosny Park Interchange, significantly increasing travel time.\
  • The 731 and 732 services only cover part of Midway Point and do not service the newer northern areas of the suburb.

The issue

  • Public transport is not a viable option for residents who wish to stay in the city for dinner, cultural events, or evening activities due to the early final service.
  • The lack of direct express services discourages commuters, as slower routes make travel time uncompetitive with driving.
  • Residents in the northern parts of Midway Point face long walking distances to the nearest bus stop, creating barriers for older residents, people with mobility challenges, and families with young children.

My plan

  • Advocate for later evening services on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from Hobart to Sorell, Midway Point, and Dodges Ferry.
  • Advocate for direct express services between Sorell and Midway Point and Hobart that do not travel via Rosny Park or Cambridge.
  • Advocate to extend the 731 and 732 routes to service the newer northern areas of Midway Point.

The benefits

  • Residents will have greater freedom to participate in evening activities such as dining, events, and community gatherings in Hobart without relying on private vehicles.
  • Improved express services will reduce travel times, making public transport a more attractive option for commuters.
  • Better coverage across Midway Point will improve accessibility for older residents, people with disabilities, and those with limited mobility.
  • Increased public transport use will help reduce traffic congestion and parking pressure in Hobart.
  • More reliable and inclusive services will support local jobs, education, and social connection across the region. Improved transport options will contribute to lower household transport costs and reduced carbon emissions.
