Current situation
- Residents have raised ongoing concerns about speeding along Fulham Road, particularly near the intersection with Beach Road in Connellys Marsh.
- There are also concerns about limited visibility when turning from Beach Road onto Fulham Road.
- After being contacted, Council reviewed the intersection and advised that it meets existing codes and guidelines for visibility.
- Council subsequently installed pedestrian warning signs on Fulham Road on both approaches to the Beach Road intersection.
The issue
- Traffic volumes on Fulham Road have increased significantly over the past five years.
- Residents want reassurance that the intersection is as safe as possible for vehicles entering Fulham Road from Beach Road.
- Many residents are confused by the installation of pedestrian signage, as there is very little pedestrian activity in this area.
My plan
- Collect up-to-date traffic and speed data at multiple points along Fulham Road to understand the scale and pattern of speeding.
- Review the safety of the Beach Road and Fulham Road intersection using current traffic conditions.
- Work directly with local residents to identify practical concerns and priorities.
- Implement simple, low cost speed calming measures where appropriate, such as signage changes, road markings, or other proven traffic calming treatment
- Advocate for further action if data shows existing measures are not effective.
The benefits
- Improves safety for residents entering and exiting Beach Road by reducing vehicle speeds on Fulham Road.
- Ensures traffic decisions are based on current data
- Builds trust by valuing local knowledge and lived experience alongside technical assessments.
- Uses cost effective solutions that can be implemented quickly rather than waiting years for major upgrades.
- Reduces the risk of serious accidents at a key rural intersection.
- Creates a more consistent and predictable driving environment for both locals and visitors.
- Demonstrates a proactive approach to road safety rather than reacting only after incidents occur.
