Current situation
- Primrose Sands was once made up mostly of holiday homes, but it has increasingly become a community of permanent residents. As this shift has occurred, local footpath infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing number of people living in the area year round.
The issue
- Many residents are forced to walk on the road because there are no continuous or safe footpaths.
- Grevillea Street is a popular walking route however can be particularly dangerous due to dips in the road that limit visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
- In several locations the nature strip is uneven, narrow, or unsuitable for walking, creating safety risks for pedestrians of all ages, particularly children, older residents, and people with mobility challenges.
My plan
- Undertake a feasibility study for the installation of a connected footpath loop in Primrose Sands along Grevillea Street, Linden Road, and Primrose Sands Road.
- The study would assess where footpaths can be accommodated and provide a cost estimate.
The benefits
- This would significantly improve pedestrian safety by reducing the need for residents to walk on the road and by creating clearer separation between vehicles and people.
- It would encourage walking and physical activity, supporting better health and wellbeing for residents of all ages.
- It would improve accessibility for people with prams, wheelchairs, mobility aids, and young children learning to walk or ride.
- It would strengthen community connection by making it easier and safer for neighbours to move around the area and access local destinations.
- It would support future planning by providing Council and the community with clear information about costs, constraints, and priorities before construction begins.
- It would reflect the changing nature of Primrose Sands from a holiday area to a permanent residential community, ensuring infrastructure matches current and future needs.
